The phenomenon of future rewards being devalued as a function of delay is referred to as delay discounting (DD). It is considered a measure of impulsivity, and steep DD characterizes psychiatric problems such as addictive disorders and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. This preliminarily study examined prefrontal hemodynamic activity using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in healthy young adults performing a DD task. Prefrontal activity during a DD task with hypothetical monetary rewards was measured in 20 participants. A discounting rate (k-value) in the DD task was determined on the basis of a hyperbolic function. To validate the k-value, a DD questionnaire and the Barratt impulsiveness scale (BIS) were administered after fNIRS. The DD task induced a significant increase in oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) concentration bilaterally in the frontal pole and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) compared with a control task. Significant positive correlations were detected between left PFC activity and discounting parameters. Right frontal pole activity, however, showed significantly negative correlation with motor impulsivity as a BIS subscore. These results suggest that left and right PFCs have differential contributions when performing the DD task. The present findings suggest the idea that fNIRS measurement of prefrontal hemodynamic activity can be useful for understanding the neural mechanisms underlying DD and is applicable for assessing PFC function among psychiatric patients with impulsivity-related problems.

In humans and animals, future rewards are devalued as a function of delay. This phenomenon is referred to as delay discounting. A higher discounting rate predicts impulsive choice behavior such as a preference for small, immediate rewards. Using a delay discounting questionnaire for children, the present study examined delay discounting of monetary rewards in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to evaluate their impulsivity. A questionnaire about self-regulating behavior in daily life was also used to validate the discounting rate. Children that chose small, immediate rewards in the questionnaire about self-regulating behavior showed higher discounting rates than did children who chose larger, delayed rewards, suggesting that discounting rates are correlated with impulsive choice behavior in daily life. Children with ADHD and ASD did not differ significantly in discounting rates; however, both groups showed higher rates than did previously reported typically developing children, implying that children with ADHD and ASD tend to devalue future rewards more steeply. Discounting rates in children with ADHD, but not those with ASD, were negatively correlated with age. These results suggest that delay discounting may be useful for understanding and assessing impulsivity in children with ADHD and ASD.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Atomoxetine (ATX), a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, is the first approved non-stimulant drug for treatment of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD). The present study examined the effects of long-term treatment with ATX on prefrontal hemodynamic activity in AD/HD children during a continuous performance task (CPT) using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). METHODS: Prefrontal hemodynamic activity was measured in 12 children with AD/HD during experimental sessions conducted before and 6 months or more after starting ATX treatment. The average maintenance dose of ATX was 1.6 mg/kg/day. Fourteen age-matched typically developing children participated as a control group. RESULTS: In the control group, the CPT induced a significant increase in oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) concentration in the bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). In the AD/HD group in the pre-ATX condition, the CPT did not induce a significant increase in oxy-Hb concentration in any of the NIRS channels, but induced a significant decrease in oxy-Hb concentration in the left ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC). In the AD/HD group in the post-ATX condition, significant activation was observed in the right DLPFC and the decrease in oxy-Hb concentration in the left VLPFC disappeared. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that long-term treatment with ATX improved prefrontal hemodynamic activity in AD/HD children, and NIRS may be useful for assessment of the prefrontal hemodynamic response to ATX treatment.

To quantify a subject's skill at visual interpolation, as in the identification of incomplete letters, we developed a new computer-based system for presenting fragmented letters of the English alphabet. Using this system, we examined the quantitative relationship between the fragmentation of letters and their correct identification in six healthy young male subjects. The 26 letters (black, 72-point, MSP Gothic) were randomly displayed one by one on the screen of a personal computer: each letter appeared once per test. Each of the letters was presented within a square (128 × 128 pixels) against a white background for 200 ms. The fragmented letters were produced by randomly removing pixels from complete letters using three different modes of elimination: removal of single dots or small and large rectangles with random rotation. The complete and fragmented letters were evaluated with respect to the density of information provided by the pixels that constituted the letters according to information theory. There was a direct correlation between the percentage of pixels removed from the complete letters and the density of information about the removed pixels. The scores for the correct identification of fragmented letters with dot elimination remained at almost 100% correct identification regardless of the percentage of pixels removed. In contrast, the correct identification scores with the elimination of large rectangles decreased with the removal of 70%, 80%, 86%, 90%, and 92% of pixels. The correct identification scores for the elimination of small rectangles fell between the scores for the other elimination modes. These results suggest that the identification of fragmented letters could be related to the recognition of structures in which imaginary lines exist between closest pixels, within some limited distance between existing pixels. The evaluation of fragmented-letter identification using this system may be useful for quantifying the capability of visual interpolation.

The rates at which endothelial and smooth muscle cells in vessel walls should consume oxygen during blood transport along the length of a microvascular network are highly controversial. We examined the arteriovenous distribution of oxygen consumption by a microvesselwallexposed to circumferentialwallstress and fluid shear stress. A model of retinal microcirculation in which a network that branched dichotomously at every bifurcation depended on both a flow conservation law and a modified Murray's law with a diameter exponent of 2.85 was used. Oxygen consumption was calculated from the integration of the number of branches multiplied by the consumption rates of the endothelial and smooth muscle cells per branch unit. The oxygen consumption by all of the microvessel walls was only about 1.9% of the totaloxygen consumption throughout the microvascular network, including the surrounding tissues. This result suggests that the oxygen that had diffused across the microvessel walls was mainly consumed by the surrounding tissues. Also, based on the circumferential and shear stresses, the microvascular flow and pressure control system is presumably designed to optimize the vessel tone of the arteriolar network so that the microcirculation can accommodate material exchange.

AIMS: The aim was to measure the prefrontal cortical activity involved in shifting spatial attention to visual stimuli in the left or right visual field using near-infrared spectroscopy. METHODS: Eleven participants performed a simple vigilance task, an endogenous attention task and an exogenous attention task. In the endogenous task, the left or the right side of the center diamond brightened, indicating the side for subsequent target appearance (controlled shift of attention). In the exogenous task, the peripheral squares brightened, indicating the appearance of target in those squares (reflexive shift of attention). RESULTS: Stimuli at validly cued locations were responded to faster than stimuli at invalidly cued locations. Increases in oxyhemoglobin (oxy-Hb) were observed in the right prefrontal cortex throughout the 3 tasks, and in the left prefrontal cortex during the vigilance and the exogenous tasks. In the exogenous task, marked decreases in oxy-Hb were observed in the bilateral ventrolateral prefrontal cortex. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the left and the right prefrontal cortices mediate distinct cognitive processes during the performance of visuospatial attentional tasks.

To characterize a compensatory function of the dopaminergic system of residual dopamine (DA) neurons in the mesolimbic pathway with DA-depleting lesions, we compared tissue and extracellular concentrations of DA and its metabolites in the nucleus accumbens (NACC) of adult rats with neonatal 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) treatment with those of control rats with neonatal vehicle treatment using high-performance liquid chromatography. The tissue concentration of DA for 6-OHDA-treated rats was 26.9% of that for the control rats, whereas the extracellular DA was not significantly different from the controls. Furthermore, the extracellular DA concentration in the NACC of 6-OHDA-treated rats was significantly increased compared to the controls following neurotensin (NT) microinjection into the ventral tegmental area (VTA). These results suggest that the extracellular DA of the adult rat brain following neonatal 6-OHDA treatment was compensated for by increasing the release of DA from terminals in the NACC of remaining DA neurons through increased mesolimbic pathway afferents (increased demand), as well as by decreasing the synaptic DA reuptake sites and/or D4 receptors. This study supports our hypothesis that the compensatory mechanism(s) of remaining DA neurons in the mesolimbic system are underlying in behavioral characteristics of adult rats with neonatal depletion of brain DA.

Intracerebroventricular treatment of the catecholamine neurotoxin, 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) after desmethylimipramine pretreatment results in semipermanent brain dopamine (DA) depletion. It has been shown that rats neonatally treated with 6-OHDA show hyperactivity in an open-field test. The purpose of this study was to investigate the spontaneous motor activity in neonatal 6-OHDA-treated rats following bilateral saline (SAL; 0.25 microliter) or neurotensin (NT; 1.25, 2.50, 5.00 micrograms/0.25 microliter/side) microinjection into the ventral tegmental area. Each dose of NT significantly augmented locomotor activity in 6-OHDA-treated rats. On the other hand, controls did not show significant increase in lower dose of NT. Effect of NT microinjection on number of rearings in the 6-OHDA-treated group was not significantly altered compared to the vehicle-treated group. These results suggest that the responses in locomotor activity to NT the ventral tegmental area increase in neonatal 6-OHDA-treated rats, and imply that residual activity in mesolimbic DA neurons which is mediated by NT receptors contributes to a part of the hyperactivity seen after neonatal 6-OHDA lesion.

The present study analyzed previous studies investigating effects of 4 techniques consisting humanitude, i.e. looking, talking, touching, and raising. The results showed that there has been little quantitative research investigating effects of these 4 techniques on caregivers and care recipients and behaviors of caregivers and care recipients can be described as operant behaviors. Therefore, it was suggested that it is needed to describe behaviors of humanitude caregivers and care recipients as operant behavior and construct a model describing interactions of these operant behaviors.

The present study examined the delay discounting as a measure of impulsivity in children with ADHD and autism spectrum disorders (ASD), using a delay discounting questionnaire. We also investigated the relationship between the impulsivity and frontal hemodynamic activities during the delay discounting task using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). The obtained results can be summarized as follows: (1) children with ADHD and ASD showed higher delay discounting rates than typically developing children. (2) In the healthy adolescents, the delay discounting task produced significant activities in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). (3) ADHD adolescents treated with pharmacological therapy also showed prefrontal activities during the task. These findings suggest that neuropsychological examination using delay discounting task and NIRS may be useful for diagnosis of ADHD and assessment of the prefrontal hemodynamic response to pharmacological treatments.

A model of the hypothesized relationships between psychological factors regarding self-care (general self-efficacy, self-control, social support and self-efficacy regarding self-care) was tested in young heathy and elder healthy participants using structural equation modeling (SEM). For young participants, general self-efficacy had a direct association with self-control and self-control had a direct association with self-efficacy regarding self-care. For elder participant, however, general self-efficacy had a direct association with social support and social support had a direct association with self-efficacy regarding self-care. In sum, young people with high self-efficacy tend to show high self-control resulting in good self-care whereas elder people with high self-efficacy have high social support resulting in good self-care. It was suggested different interventions for self-care are needed for young and elder people.

In the educational field, we developed a test of delay discounting for schoolchildren and university students. Rates of discounting in schoolchildren are correlated with learning performances in mathematics and could be improved by educational interventions. Similarly, rates of discounting in university students were correlated with their learning attitudes and high discounting rates predicted less time in writing research papers. In the medical field, patients with type II diabetes mellitus who showed low scores in sensation seeking scales showed high HbA1c after discharging. Moreover, we developed a self-control scale for health behavior and showed that high scores of the scale predicted better oral cares in elder healthy people and more faithful observances of medications and dietary cures in chronic kidney disease.
